Welcome to the Balmaitri Projects website. These pages will heartwarmingly introduce you to village life in northern India and the efforts of one man, Mr Rishi Kumar, to make a difference in many people’s lives. You’ll meet children who were not progressive due to a lack of education and resources as well as village people who are blind or disabled or under the effects of incurable diseases, and women who are widows and neglected by society. You’ll also have a chance to get involved in the projects through volunteering, visiting the projects, financial support or simply by spreading the word about Balmaitri amongst your family and friends.

Rishi Kumar, the founder, believes that you can save the children by educating them academically, about personal growth and hygiene, developing confidence and by building morals and instilling values. In turn, the children will educate their villages to the benefit of all. If the village is saved, nature can be saved.

Rishi has developed three major projects, the Balmaitri School and Children’s Home, the Balmaitri Ramajiwala School and the Village Education Project.

Balmaitri School and Children’s Home – is located 18 km from Luxman Jhula, Rishikesh in the state of Uttarakhand India. The school focuses on providing education for village children in rural India. Forty children live in the Balmaitri home. Some are orphans, some are from single parent homes and all are from poor backgrounds. A total of 140 children attend the school daily from several surrounding villages, some walking up to 10 kms a day to reach the school. Some families are able to contribute to school fees but most pay only a nominal amount or don’t pay at all.

The children learn Hindi, English, math, Sanskrit, science, history, geography and are always learning about nature and the ecosystem. They also write, produce and perform puppet shows and plays about alcoholism, the environment, encouraging the education of girls, managing the ecosystem and how we can save the social environment. The 12 teachers at the school also lead cultural activities such as drama, music, art, public speaking and dance.
